Boolean Networks are the simplest type of artificial network somewhere between Cellular Automata and Neural Networks.

One of the first researchers to utilize Boolean Networks was Stuart A. Kaufmann.

Here is a simulation of his simplest Random Boolean Network Sun Java Applet as detailed in "The Origins of Order" [kau93].
